Dual Driver Licences All drivers, regardless of whether they want to drive a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle, can apply for a dual licence from 1 April 2010. A driver with a dual licence can drive both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles. All applicants will need to undergo a medical examination and if over 65 years of age, these will need to be completed annually. All applicants will now also have to take a knowledge test before they get their dual driver's badge, guidelines are available in the download area. The licence lasts for three years and the current fee is £180. Licensing conditions, application forms for first time applicants and renewals are available in the download area. A medical form which must be completed by a doctor is also available in the download area. Before being licensed, you must undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, for more information on this, click here. A number of bodies can undertake these checks, including Chelmsford Borough Council. If you choose to do it this way, complete the CRB forms provided with your application pack and return to Maldon District Council with your driver's application form and an additional fee of £36 to cover the CRB search. Vehicle Licences A hackney carriage vehicle can ply for hire in the streets or pick up passengers on the designated taxi ranks situated throughout the Maldon District. A private hire vehicle can not pick up passengers unless a booking has been previously made with the company operating the vehicle. The licence lasts for one year and the current fee is £230. Licensing conditions and application forms for first time applications and renewals are available in the download area. Vehicles must be tested regularly at a test centre approved by the Council - see below for a list of centres in the Maldon District. Under special circumstances, the Council may exempt a vehicle from the licensing requirement to display front and back plates. If you would like to be exempted from this licensing condition, you will need to make an application to the Council. An application form is available in the download area.
