Friends Groups Latest News

Oak Tree Meadow Community Group, Heybridge
Virtually everything the group set out to do five years ago has now been achieved and the focus of the groups activities is now moving towards managing the new facilities. However, the group is still looking to improve the site and recently new swings and picnic benches have been installed along with a new information board.

St George's Field, Heybridge Basin
The Friends succesfully persuaded EDF Energy to remove the overhead power cables which crossed the site and bury them underground. This has greatly improved the visual appearance of the site and made activitites such as kite flying much safer. The group have recently secured funds to improve access to the site from the adjacent sea wall and work should start in April 2008.

Orchard Meadows, Southminster                                                               The Friends of Southminster Community Open Spaces were awarded £6,700 from Essex Environment Trust to improve facilities at the site. A basketball net, football goals and new benches have been installed and several hundred wildflower plugs have been planted. The groups work to restore the orchard continues with regular work parties along with visits from local schoolchildren.

Funds have recently been secured from the Big Lottery to install a childrens play area on the site. Public consultation on this project will be carried out later this year.

West Maldon Recreation Ground                                                             Work has been completed on a range of improvements funded by a £12000 grant from Essex County Council's Community Initiatives Fund. An important footpath link was widened, a new picnic area constructed and several new benches installed.

The group are planning further work to improve access to The Spinney.

Elms Farm Park                                                                                                    A grant of £3000 from the Essex County Council Community Initiative Fund has paid for waymarkers for a circular walk, additional seating and a new information board. Nestboxes made by a local school have also been installed.

A recent ecological survey of the park praises the way the site is managed for both visitors and wildlife.
