Rivers

The River Blackwater lies to the north of the River Thames, on the east coast of Essex. It is one of the largest recreational rivers on the east coast of England and is bordered by the Colne Estuary to the north and the River Crouch to the south. It is approximately sixteen miles from its navigable head at Maldon to the open North Sea.

For navigation purposes, the Blackwater and Colne Estuaries are covered by Admiralty Chart no 3741. Further information can be obtained by entering the UK Hydrographic Offices website at: http://www.ukho.gov.uk/Pages/Home.aspx

Improvements & the future
Maldon District Council recognises the importance of the area, and has invested many thousands of pounds over the past years in providing better facilities for yachtsmen and berth-holders alike. These have included an enlarged visitors pontoon, showers and toilets, laundry facilities and adjustments to the working hours that staff are available.

Future improvements are planned which include landscaping, resurfacing and strengthening the fabric of the Quay. However, these improvements are all subject to obtaining funding, and at this time it is unlikely they will go ahead in the current financial year.

Contacts
Should you wish to visit the Quay by boat, and require a berth alongside, please contact the River Bailiff on tel. 01621 854477, or by using our online Contact the River Bailiff e-form.

Current overnight rates are £10.64 + VAT up to 7.99 metres and £12.77 + VAT per night for vessels above that length. A key to the visitors facilities can be obtained from the River Bailiff.

Thames Barges
Some barges hold open days from time to time alongside the Quay, and are also available for charter. For more information, please see the Thames Sailing Barges page. Information on open days can be obtained from the River Bailiff.
