If you privately rent your property, the amount of rent used in the calculation of benefit may be restricted by the Rent Office.  The Rent Service is independent of the Council and they will make a decision on whether the amount of rent charged for the property is a fair rent.

If the Rent Officer thinks that your rent is not a fair rent, they will provide us with an amount for the property and this is used to calculate your benefit.  Therefore, unless you have completed a pre-tenancy determination, the amount of benefit stated on the following calculation will not take into account any decision made by the Rent Office.

Remember this calculation is an estimate based on the information you supply. For a full evaluation you should make a formal claim as soon as possible.

Usually Benefit will only start from the Monday after the Council receive your form.
