Evidence Required

You need to provide evidence of your identity and income

We must see the original documents, not copies.  If you do not provide the evidence we need, we might not be able award Benefit.  We need the same evidence for both you and your partner.

Documents needed to verify your claim:

Proof of Identity

Birth Certificate                             Marriage Certificate

Recent Gas or Electric Bill

Proof of National Insurance Number

We need to see proof of any interest or dividends you get on investments/savings.  We will need to see your last two months bank/building society account statements showing all transactions.  If you have cashed in any investments we will also need to see proof of this, for example letter from bank/building society or bank statements showing credit into accounts.

If you (or you and your partner) have more than £16,000 in savings or capital you will not be entitled to either Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit. However, if you receive Guarantee Pension Credit you may still be entitled.

Proof of Earnings

This is required for yourself and your partner

2 payslips if you are paid every month

3 payslips if you are paid every 2 weeks

5 payslips if you are paid weekly

If you or your partner are self-employed, we need to see your accounts for the last financial year, or if you have been trading for less than six months, a summary of your trading records so far. Alternatively you can complete the self-employed proforma with the application form or access as a separate document from the download area on this page.

Proof of Other Income

Such as pension slips from a former employer or a letter from the court showing how much maintenance you are getting.  We need to see proof of any money people pay you for board and lodgings.

Proof of Benefit, Allowances or Pensions

Such as award notices or letters form Social Security confirming how much you get

Disability Living Allowance              Income Support

Carers Allowance                              Job Seekers Allowance

Child Benefit                                       Attendance Allowance

Working and Child Tax Credit         Incapacity Benefit

Retirement Pension                         Pension Credits

Private Pension                                 War / Widows Pension

Employment and Support Allowance 

Proof of Private Rent and Tenancy

Such as a rent book, rent receipts, a tenancy agreement or a letter form your landlord.

Proof of other Money Paid out

The only expense that, in certain circumstances, is taken into account in the calculation of benefit is child care costs, if they are paid to a registered child minder or nursery.  You will need to provide the registration number for the child minder and proof of the amount of child care costs paid, that is invoices, receipts, etc.
