What to expect from the Class:
The class will last one hour. If you use a walking aid you are welcome to use it in the class but you will be encouraged from time to time to try and walk without it within the safety of the class environment.

The exercise class starts with a gentle warm up to loosen the joints and warm up the muscles. There is then some stretching to improve flexibility.

During the main part of the class there will be emphasis on strengthening the legs, arms, backs, ankles and even the pelvic floor muscles. There will also be some ball games to work on co-ordination, reaction and balance.

Finally, you will be introduced to Tai Chi, a slow controlled form of exercise that had been shown to improve balance and posture. The ability of the other people in the class will vary and everybody will work at their own pace.

There is a social element to the class and the class will end with tea and a chance to chat to new friends.

What does it cost?
We ask for a voluntary contribution of £1.50 for the class and you may want to bring money for tea and coffee.

How will I feel?
The day after the first few classes you may feel a bit of muscle soreness, as you will be using muscles for movements you may not be used to. This should not last more than a couple of sessions and it is normal.

Within 4 – 6 weeks you should feel noticeable improvements in your flexibility, balance, strength and your confidence. With time, we hope that you will be both able and interested in progressing to other local exercise opportunities, such as Tai Chi, especially designed for older persons wanting to keep active.

What we expect from you

We are continually evaluating the effectiveness of the classes, so we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire when you join and at the end of your course. These will cover your feelings about the classes, any improvements you feel (physical, social and mental) and any changes you feel would make the class more enjoyable.
