Helping to Prevent Crime

Essex Police alone cannot prevent or solve these problems and a successful community safety approach requires the participation of local people: individuals, groups and organisations.

Community based partnerships can assist in inhibiting and remedying crime and the causes of crime and help improve the life of all of our residents.

Examples of How You Can Help Prevent Crime

  • Contact the Crime Reduction Officer (telephone 01245 212549) for crime prevention advice or leaflets on home security
  • Report suspicious behaviour or incidents to the Police
  • Think personal safety when you are out, e.g. don't use dark alleyways at night; don't accept lifts from strangers; be aware of threatening body language in people that you may meet; always take the safe option.

Your Home

  • Join or form a Neighbourhood Watch Group. These relate to a street, an area or even a specific site e.g. a church or a school Post code your property - indoors and in the garden shed/garage
  • Secure your home when unattended – shut ground floor windows during the night; don't leave a key under the mat; leave a light on if you are out in the evenings; fit an alarm if you can afford it; take the obvious precautions; ask your local police for advice (see below)
  • Carry out a home security survey of your home – Imagine you are a burglar!

Your Vehicle

  • Lock and secure your vehicle when unattended
  • Fit an alarm / immobiliser to your car
  • Park your car in a garage if you have one, always lock it
  • Do not leave property visible in your car when unattended
  • Report any apparently abandoned cars to the District Council
