Exotic, Dangerous or Wild Animals

If you keep exotic, dangerous or wild animals, you may need a licence from the Council.

Do I need a licence?
There are certain animals that are considered to be dangerous.  For further information and classifications of Dangerous Wild Animals,
please see the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) within Schedule of Species

If you keep one or more of the species listed within the Schedule
, you will need to apply for a licence.

How do I get a licence?
To apply for a new licence or to renew a licence, you will need to complete an application form which is available from the download area.  Once completed, send the application with the appropriate fee of £150 to the Council.

When you apply for a licence, an authorised officer from the Council will inspect your premises, especially the area where the animals are kept and have access to.  A vet will also visit to assess the health and welfare of the animal (the cost of the vet is re-charged to the person who applies for the licence).

The Council will issue the licence as required by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

Licences must be renewed on an annual basis.

If you require further infomation, contact the Council or use the online enquiry form.
