Foot and Mouth Disease

Foot and Mouth Disease is a viral disease which affects certain types of animals, BUT IT DOES NOT AFFECT HUMANS.

Since August 2007, there have been several cases of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey.  A Foot and Mouth restriction zone is in place in the south east of England where the movement of animals susceptible to Foot and Mouth are subject to strict controls.  There are no restrictions in the rest of the country for Foot and Mouth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I be infected by Foot and Mouth Disease?

No, there is no risk to human health as the disease only affects certain types of animals such as cattle.

Can I walk my dog in the countryside?

Yes, however, it is best to avoid walking close to livestock and dogs should be kept on a lead where there may be livestock.

Will it affect my dog?

No, the disease only affects certain types of animals such as cows.

Are there any restrictions on meat?

There are no restrictions on meat entering the food chain, however, fresh meat or meat products, fresh milk or milk products should not be taken abroad.
