Riding Establishments
If you run a riding establishment, you will need a licence from the Council.

A riding establishment is defined as the business of keeping horses for either riding or hire, or the purpose of instruction for the return of payment.

How do I get a licence?
To apply for a new licence or to renew a licence, you will need to complete an application form which is available in the download area.  Once completed, send the application with the appropriate fee of £206 to the Council.

When you apply for the licence, an authorised officer from the Council will inspect the premises to ensure that you are complying with licence conditions (available in the download area).  A vet will also visit to assess the health and welfare of the horses (the cost of the vet is re-charged to the person running the business).

The Council will issue the licence providing that you comply with the requirements of the licence conditions issued under the Riding Establishments Acts 1964 and 1970.

Licences must be renewed on an annual basis.

If you require further information or would like to make a complaint about a riding establishment, contact the Council or use the online enquiry form.
