Health & Safety

Health and safety legislation applies to all people regardless of whether they are employers, employees, self-employed, contractors or visitors, including the public, if they may be affected by the work activity.

 

Inspections and risk assessment

·         The Council operates a continuous programme of workplace inspections where it is the enforcing authority.  Following an inspection, the officer will carry out an assessment of risk, businesses will fall into one of the following categories and will be inspected at the frequency specified.

Health and Safety Advice

·         If you are an employer or employee and would like health and safety advice, contact the Council or use the online request form.

 

Accidents

·      Employers and the self-employed have a duty to report certain types of accidents under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR).  This may be done by contacting the Council or via the RIDDOR Incident Contact Centre click here. 

 

·         Authorised Council officers will assess each accident notification and decide if it needs further investigation.

 

Complaints

·         If you are an employee or member of the public and would like to make a complaint about the workplace, contact the Council or use the online request formEvery complaint will be investigated, but personal details will be kept in confidence.

 

Enforcement action

·        The Department holds a register of all health and safety notices served under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 which is available to the public for viewing.

 

      The HSE also holds a public register of convictions which may be found by clicking here.

 

Home Safety

·        The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 does not cover home safety, however, various organisations do promote these issues such as ROSPA - see related links.
