Workplace Transport

Each year, a significant number of people are killed by accidents and many more people are injured by vehicles in the workplace.  The law requires that these risks are controlled so far as is reasonably practicable.

Workplace transport means any vehicle used for work purposes such as fork lift trucks, tractors, cars, etc.  Workplace transport should be considered during the risk assessment process - for more information on risk assessment, click here.

When looking for hazards, look at:

  • the vehicles themselves;
  • the route and roadways used;
  • what drivers do and what others are doing.

Every traffic route must be suitable for its intended use and each workplace must be organised so that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate safely.  Visibility, speed, lighting, housekeeping, maintenance and signage are all important for a safe a working environment.

Employees should be competent and receive the necessary training.  If possible, reversing should be avoided as nearly 25% of all deaths involving workplace transport occur this way.  It can be avoided, for example, by using 1-way systems.

There will be other hazards such a coupling and uncoupling; loading and unloading; tipping and overturn; and falling from height which should all be considered.

If you would like to report a hazard, contact the Council or use the online service request form.
