Cockroaches are large insects with a large antannae, two pairs of wings and range in size from 10 to 23 millimetres. The most common types found in England are the Oriental Cockroach and the German Cockroach. The Oriental Cockroach is black and larger than the German Cockroach which is brown and can climb smooth surfaces. Female cockroaches produce up to 8 egg cases monthly, these can contain up to 30 eggs and will hatch in 2 to 4 weeks (6 to 12 weeks for Oriental cockroaches). You may notice the eggs, which are the brown and the size and shape of a kidney bean or the faeces which look like black pepper. Cockroaches can be found in premises where food is stored or handled, most of the time they will hide in cracks and around drains becoming most active at night. Infestations are mainly introduced to premises in food and laundry deliveries. Risks Cockroaches carry food poisoning germs on their bodies and can be responsible for the spread of gastroenteritis and dysentery. They will feed on nearly anything including faeces. Food contamination will occur when the insect comes in to contact with food, food preparation surfaces or through surfaces or through faecal contamination of foodstuffs. Preventative action Infestations can be prevented by making sure premises are clean and that there are no food sources or hiding places. Fill cracks and holes and move debris and rubbish from the house.
