It is recognised that certain industrial processes have the potential to cause pollution to the atmosphere. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 required that processes prescribed in law complied with specific operating conditions (authorisations).
The inspection and regulation of these processes is carried out by either the Environment Agency or Maldon District Council.
Industrial processes are covered under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act, and they are classified as A1, A2 or B processes. The Environmental Agency regulates A1 processes and Maldon District Council regulates A2 and B processes.
For more information on the A1, A2 and B classifications, please see the website for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Maldon District Council regulates and inspects 21 industrial (prescribed) processes within its district. Strict operating conditions have been set on the prescribed processes, ensuring that pollution to the atmosphere from these premises meets government guidelines.
Council regulated processes include:
- vapour recovery
- wood coating and coating materials
- mobile crushing and screening
- waste oil burners
- re-spraying of road vehicles.
