In October 2005, Maldon District Council, Chelmsford Borough Council, Brentwood District Council and Braintree District Council retained the University of the West of England, Bristol to undertake an appraisal of the local economy and provide an assessment of its future out look.

Some issues covered include;

• An audit of strengths and weaknesses of the sub-regional economy and consideration of future opportunities and threats.
• An examination of the relationship between projected employment growth and housing provision as envisaged in the East of England Draft Economic Strategy and Regional Spatial Strategy
• Projections of employment land requirements.
