Concessionary Bus Passes - National Travel.

Since April 2006, residents of the Maldon District aged 60 or over and eligible disabled, have been entitled to free off peak travel on buses, anywhere within Essex.  From 1st April 2008, the new national bus concession enabled eligible users to get free off-peak travel on buses anywhere in England.

If you were born after 5 April 1950, you will have to wait a few months longer to claim your pass when you reach age 60.


Do I qualify for a National Travel Pass issued by Maldon District Council?

To qualify for a Free Travel Pass, you must be a permanent resident of the Maldon District and fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • be of pensionable age or over
  • be registered disabled
  • not permitted to drive, or likely to be refused a driving licence on medical grounds

What does a Travel Pass entitle me to?

Your new Travel Pass entitles you to travel for FREE on participating bus services, for off-peak journeys anywhere in England. (Please note this does not include Scotland, Wales or Ireland)

Your pass will entitle you to travel from 9.00am until 11.00pm on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Please note off-peak times may vary slightly around the Country.

Maldon District Council also offers companion passes for those who require additional assistance when travelling.

How do I apply for a pass?

If you wish to apply for a Travel Pass, please complete and return the appropriate application form to the right of this page. 

Please return the form to us with two passport sized photographs.

You will also need to provide proof of age, such as a passport, driving licence or birth certificate. Please note those providing a birth certificate that have changed their last name will be required to supply documents such as a marriage certificate or alternative proof of ID.

In addition, you will need to provide proof of residency, such as a bank statement, utilities bill or driving licence.

If you are under 60 years old and wish to apply, you will need to provide proof of your disablement, such as a Blue Badge or a Disabled Living Allowance Award Letter. Plus a suitable Doctor's declaration.

Application forms should be returned to the Council Offices either in person or by post. All ID documentation received in the post will be returned to the sender by second class post.

What should I do if I don't receive my pass?

Passes are processed by Maldon District Council but are assembled off site. Passes are sent to applicants by second class post and can take up to 10 - 14 working days to arrive.

If you do not receive your pass as expected, please get in touch with our Customer Services Team, who will be happy to assist you.

What should I do if my pass arrives with my details wrong?

Whilst we strive to offer the best possible service, sometimes mistakes do happen. If you are not completely happy with your pass or if any or your details are wrong, please return your pass to us so we can arrange for a replacement to be sent to you.
