Confused about how to compost? Click here for a quick guide.
Like some tips on what you should be doing in your garden month by month? Click here. Food Digesters
Already composting at home? Looking for the next step to reduce more of your food waste? Food digesters maybe the answer. Not only do they take your vegetable peelings like a standard compost bin but also cooked food.
These fabulous alternatives or additions to the humble compost bin will help battle the growing problem of food waste in landfill as well as lightening your black bag waste and reducing odours.
The following three systems have something for everyone - whether space is an issue, low maintenance is a priority, or you want something that takes both green waste and all food waste.
Bokashi bin
This fabulous system allows you to turn ALL kitchen waste into nutrient rich compost. This includes meat, fish, dairy products and cooked food.
Simply place all kitchen waste into the airtight container and sprinkle with a handful of Bokashi. This is a bran-based material made with a culture of micro-organisms which begins to compost the waste. After a few days the contents can be safely transferred into a traditional compost bin or simply dug into the garden. Liquid feed can be drained off and is alive with beneficial microbes. This can be diluted as a plant feed or poured down drains to prevent algae build up and odours. This process does not produce smells or attract flies so the container can be safely kept in the kitchen. To order call 0845 1306090 or www.recycleforessex.co.uk
Green Cone This is an ideal solution for those with limited space and who do not require compost. This is a solar-heated garden unit taking all cooked and uncooked food waste including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit.
The system does not produce compost and instead breaks down the food into its natural components of water, carbon dioxide and a small residue which only requires emptying from the food digester every 2-3 years at the most.
Green Cone have teamed up with Maldon District Council to offer residents the Green Cone at a discounted rate. Take advantage of the Green Cone for £74.95 (RRP £77.81.) Please view file in download area.
Green Johanna This has been described at the "Rolls Royce" of compost bins. This food digester not only takes cooked and uncooked food but also green waste. The bin looks like a compost bin with the only real difference being it prefers a shaded area.
Green Cone have teamed up with Maldon District Council to offer residents the Green Johanna at a heavily discounted rate. Take advantage of the Green Johanna for £74.95 (RRP £106.63.) Please view file in download area.
