The End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive
The ELV Directive is a set of UK Government regulations which came into effect on 1 January 2007. This entitles last owners of vehicles to a "free take-back" of their old vehicles, known as End of Life Vehicles (ELVs).
Car manufacturers have now created facilities to take back their own brands when they have reached the end of their life.
At present, the UK scraps around two million cars and vans each year but with new "producer responsibility" regulations things are to change, helping the environment as well as car owners who will no longer need to pay to dispose of their vehicles.
There is already an 85% target in place to recover scrap cars and the free take back will help to achieve these targets as well as creating a real incentive for cars to be treated responsibily.
For further information or to find out where you can take your vehicle to be disposed of free of charge can be found at www.cartakeback.com and www.autogreen.org.
