Stray Dogs

Maldon District Council like all councils throughout the country now has 24 hours a day, 7 days a week responsibility for Stray Dogs.

If you find a stray dog at weekends, Bank Holidays or between the hours of 4.30pm and 8.30am Monday to Friday, please contact 07711 885894.

If you find a stray dog between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, please contact Maldon District Council on 01621 854477.

If you have lost your dog, please contact Maldon District Council on 01621 854477.

Puppy in the pound

Maldon District Council has a duty to collect stray dogs and take them to the nearest kennels if their owner cannot be located.

The Dog Warden has scanning equipment when collecting a stray in case the animal is chipped. The owner is responsible for the cost of Maldon District Council collecting the dog, which is £25 plus any further costs incurred as a result of housing the dog until the owner is located (kennelling fees are currently £9.51 per night) and any vets bills should the animal be injured when we collect it.

Please contact the Council as soon as possible if your dog is missing or if you believe a dog is a stray on (01621) 854477. We will do our best to reunite the dog with it's owner.

Dog Indentification

To prevent kenelling costs, reduce the amount of time spent on stray dogs and reunite owners and their pets quicker, a simple tag on the dogs collar will enable us to return your dog at the earliest opportunity.

The tag needs only to say the name and address of the owners and costs only a few pounds.  The majority of dogs we collect do not have collars or name tags which not only lengthens the time it takes to return the dog but is against the law under the Control of Dogs Order 1992.

Our response time

Stray dogs - First response time (telephone call to complainant or visit) 1 hour, substantive response (visit to area or agreed meeting time with recovered stray) 4 hours.
