What is litter?
Litter is anything that is dropped, thrown or deliberately placed which defaces a public place. It could be small, like a bus ticket or larger such as a box or even hazardous, like a syringe.
What does the Council provide?
As a Council we provide a regular collection of household waste. We also provide litter bins throughout the district as well as dog bins and recycling banks to ensure streets are kept clean. Leaving waste other than the facilities provided is illegal.
How to report litter
Although roads are regularly swept and litter picked they may need additional cleaning from time to time. If you see an area that is suffering from a litter problem, please let us know so we can take the necessary action and rectify any problems.
What about those who drop litter?
If Officers of the Council witness members of the public drop litter they are able to issue £80 fixed penalty notices either on the spot or via the post. Additionally, if prepared to do so, members of the public can provide a statement and the Council will issue a fixed penalty notice on this basis. In this instance it is important to note that we will only take action if the witness is prepared to stand in court if required.
