Caravans and Caravan Sites Licences

Conditions
Caravan sites are regulated and inspected by way of a licensing system in accordance with the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960. Standards on the site are controlled by conditions attached to a licence.

Maldon District Council has adopted conditions based on 1989 model standards for holiday caravan sites and permanent residential mobile home sites and the 1983 model standards for touring caravan sites. These conditions can be viewed from the Download Area.

Apply for a Licence
To apply for a Caravan Site licence, please use our
online Apply for a Caravan Site Licence e-form.

A caravan site licence can only be issued when the necessary planning permission has been granted. Therefore it is advisable to seek the advice of the
Planning Department before applying for a licence.

If you require further information, please contact the Environmental Protection team by telephoning 01621 854477, or filling on our online Contact the Environmental Protection Team e-form
.

Single Caravans
It is often mistakenly thought that a site licence is a requirement only for large holiday or residential sites. However a single caravan used for residential purposes is likely to require a licence.

Licence Exemptions
There are situations where it may not be necessary to have a caravan site licence. Exemptions include:

  • caravans which are stationed in a garden and used in conjunction with a dwelling house by family members and guests.
  • caravans used seasonally by agricultural or forestry workers.
  • caravans stationed on or near building and engineering sites and used to provide accommodation for workers.
  • sites which have been approved by exempt organisations such as The Camping and Caravanning Club.

For more information on caravan site exemptions, please see the website for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
