Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions received by the Customer Contact Centre.

Why have I got a final demand for Council Tax or Business rates?
When a Council Tax or Business Rate bill is issued, it shows the amounts you will need to pay and the dates when payment must be received by.
If you do not pay your instalments as the bill requests, the Council will send you a Final Reminder. The Final Reminder will state that you must pay all the instalments you owe within seven days.
If you do not, you will lose the right to pay by instalments and, after a further seven days, you will have to pay the total balance immediately.
If you are having problems paying your instalment on time you should contact us immediately.
If you are on a low income, you may be entitled to Council Tax Benefit and you should contact us for details and an application form.

Why cant I pay my council tax on a date other than the 1st of a month?
Although the Council fully appreciates that some customers would like to change their payment dates, payments are due on the 1st of each month.
Direct Debits can only be set up for this date and any other payment method must be set up to pay on the 1st or before.
If you are having difficulties in paying your bill please contact us or click here for more details.
