Visiting the District

Visit the Maldon District Tourism web site www.visitmaldondistrict.co.uk

The Maldon District, with its countryside, heritage, maritime history and rural charm is able to cater for visitors of all ages and tastes. Maldon town itself is one of the oldest recorded towns in Essex, and its links with the river remain as important today as they were to the early Saxon settlers.

The District has an excellent mix of places to eat, shopping facilities, museums, charming villages, unspoilt countryside, country parks and a wide range of accommodation.

The port is still trading today, and the old Thames Sailing Barges are still active on the river and can be seen at the Hythe Quay in Maldon, although their payload is now passengers rather than the more traditional cargo of yesteryear.

Nearby Burnham-on-Crouch has a distinctly nautical atmosphere, nestling on the banks of the River Crouch amid the unspoilt Dengie Marshes, providing a haven for many species of wildfowl. Here, traditional weather boarded cottages blend in with new buildings to create a picturesque thriving town with its strong attraction for yachts exploring the delights of 15 miles of fine sailing before reaching the sea.
