PREPARING YOUR FAMILY FOR AN EMERGENCY

29 9 08

What would you need in an emergency? Maldon District Council is encouraging residents to think about what they might need and to put those items into an emergency grab bag.

Whether the emergency is caused by a fire, extreme weather, a major accident, a gas leak or something else, being prepared could make a big difference.

Councillor Mrs Brenda Keighley, Chairman of the Council’s Community Services Committee said: “An emergency grab bag is exactly what it sounds like – it’s a bag with all the essentials, which you can just grab in an emergency situation.

“A few minutes spent preparing could make all the difference in an emergency, when time can be vital.”

Items to consider include:

  • Details of prescription medication
  • Identity documents
  • First aid kit
  • Radio
  • Torch
  • Batteries
  • Notebook and pen / pencil
  • Spare glasses / contact lenses
  • Mobile phone charger
  • Contact list with useful numbers
  • Insurance details
  • Spare keys

The bag should be small enough to carry and be kept in a safe but accessible place.

Residents should also think about escape routes from their property and possible meeting points. However unless you are in immediate risk at home, in an emergency families are advised to go in, stay in and tune in to local radio.

Councillor Mrs Keighley added  “The likelihood is that you will never experience an emergency first hand. But as the scouts say – be prepared.”

Maldon District Council is a member of the Essex Resilience Forum, which has produced a guide for residents on preparing for emergencies. Copies will be available at the Flood Fair events on Friday 3rd October (10am – 2pm) All Saints Church in Maldon and Saturday 4th October (10am – 2pm) Co-op supermarket, Burnham-on-Crouch.
