Are you Letting the Side Down?

13 10 08

Maldon District Council’s Street Scene Enforcement Team has just finished a two week enforcement event in Maldon and Heybridge. The aim of this event was to make residents and businesses aware of their responsibilities in relation to refuse and litter and to gain information from the public about those who are responsible for spoiling our clean and tidy District.

Officers patrolled and monitored various hot spot locations across Maldon and Heybridge at different times of the day and were pleased to see that the majority of residents are acting responsibly.  The majority dispose of their litter in the bins provided or take it home with them and clear up after their dogs.  However, there are a small minority who treat the streets, pavements and parks as a giant litter bin in which to dispose or leave unwanted “gifts”.  Throughout the two weeks Officers were gathering intelligence from residents and businesses and will now be continuing their patrols to catch those responsible and deal with them accordingly.

Businesses also play a significant role in the community and have a responsibility to ensure that any waste they produce is disposed of properly using a licensed waste carrier, and also to keep tidy the area around their premises. It was encouraging to note that on the whole most businesses were up to speed on this and those that were not have been given advice on what action they should be taking.

Cllr. Mrs Keighley, Chairman of the Council’s Community Services Committee said “the Heybridge and Maldon Enforcement weeks were an excellent opportunity for the Street Scene Enforcement Officers to be a visual part of the community. By raising awareness with residents and businesses we hope to reduce the amount of litter and dogs mess left in the street by the few people who let us down.”

If you would like to report a problem area for littering or dog fouling, or should you have information about who is responsible for causing these antisocial issues, please contact the Street Scene Enforcement Team online at www.maldon.gov.uk or by phone on 01621 854477.
