Background information on housing in the District
The majority of homes in the District are owned privately. About 10% are owned and managed by housing associations, who provide homes that are affordable. A slightly smaller proportion are rented from private landlords. Contact information for housing associations.
The number of affordable homes in the District is about 2,942, roughly one third of which is sheltered housing for older people.
In October 2011 there were approximately 1,900 people who applied for affordable housing through the Council's choice based lettings system (Gateway to Homechoice) and each year there are approximately 60 families who need to be housed urgently due to homelessness.
Each year about 100 affordable homes in the District become available. These properties are advertised through the Council's system. We know that this is not enough to meet local demand and are doing all we can to increase the supply of affordable homes. However, many people will still find it difficult to secure an affordable home.
