Planning Enforcement
The principal function of planning enforcement is to investigate alleged breaches of planning control.
Whilst not a criminal offence to carry out development without first obtaining planning permission, it may be contravention of planning laws and the Council has the power to enforce those laws. Unauthorised developments can have serious and adverse impacts on neighbouring property and the local environment.
The Government advises planning authorities to resort to enforcement action only where necessary when there is obvious harm to the built or natural environment.
If, and when, you report a potential breach of planning control, you can help us by including as much information as possible.
Once a complaint has been lodged, we investigate. We keep you informed of the progress of your complaint and may ask for more information.
When will investigations take place?
Where an alleged breach relates to a Listed Building, Preserved Tree or Tree in a Conservation Area, a site visit will take place within 1 working day;
Where an alleged breach relates to operational development, a site visit will take place within 5 working days;
Where an alleged breach relates to alleged change of use, a site visit will take place within 10 working days.
