How to claim help with your rent and council tax

How is benefit worked out?

The amount of housing benefit and council tax support you receive depends on your income, savings and who lives with you (called 'non-dependants').

Read more about how this is worked out or you can use the benefits adviser tool on the Gov website to see how much benefit you might get before completing the claim form.

What happens next?

Once your benefit is worked out, we will write to you telling you our decision and the calculation.

Your letters will advise you what to do if you think our decision about your benefit is wrong.

You should also make sure that you tell us immediately if you have a change in circumstances.  If you do not tell us about changes, you may receive too much benefit which will have to paid back.  Also further action could be taken or a penalty added to your council tax account.
