Changes to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)

The Government has recently issued legislation which extends the mandatory licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) to all such premises with 5 or more occupants.
The legislation comes into force on the 1st October 2018, thus giving landlords 6 months to apply for a licence.
Applications for a licence need to be made to Maldon District Council and on line applications are available via the Council’s website.
It is the responsibility of landlords to ensure they are licensed and it will be an offence not to have a licence with the potential for unlimited fines for non-compliance.
