Encouraging empty homes back in to use

Published on Thursday, 14th February 2019

Maldon District Council will be increasing the Council Tax payable on properties which have been empty for a period of two years or more in a bid to encourage empty homes to be brought back into use.

From 1 April 2019 the additional 50% premium will increase to 100%, and will continue to increase each year to the maximum of 300% by 2021.

The Chairman of the Council’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee, Councillor David Sismey said "There is a strong demand for housing in the Maldon District therefore it is vital that we make the best use of existing housing and continue our work to minimise the number of empty homes. This change in policy should help to encourage empty homes to be brought back into use.”

Owners of empty properties, or second homes in the District that would be interested in making them available for rent can find out more at www.maldon.gov.uk  or by calling 01621 854477
