Reasons to say ‘Cheese’ at this year’s Maldon Festival

Published on Thursday, 13th June 2019

The recipe for a perfect summer’s evening combines fine food, marvellous music and good company. So the good news is that The Maldon Festival has attracted the company behind Lithuania’s favourite cheese – Džiugas, as a 2019 Food Sponsor.

Maldon FestAudiences at key concerts will be invited to indulge in a little light cheese sampling during the interval.  It will not only be an opportunity to try the distinctively mature Džiugas cheese, but also three other products produced by Zemaitijos Pienas, one of the biggest dairy producers in Lithuania.   Mozzarella Pik-Nik Twillers and Germanto Gouda will also be on offer alongside Magija, the intriguing chocolate dessert bar made of curd.   Curd is the new food trend for 2019 and Magija is celebrating being listed in three leading supermarkets: Sainsbury’s Tesco and Aldi.

The Maldon Festival Cheese Challenge – courtesy of Džiugas – will invite audiences to see if they can order the four Džiugas cheeses by maturity.  Džiugas is considered to be ready for eating after 12 months in the cheese cellars.  But this is just the youngest vintage and is known as ‘Mild’.  The cheese goes on maturing and at 18 months it is nominated ‘Piquant’, at 24 months ‘Delicate’ and at 36 months of age it is called ‘Gourmet’.  In fact the 100 month Džiugas special edition cheese has just been awarded a Gold medal for innovation by Italy’s leading cheese show.   This is a very great honour!

The Maldon Festival is offering all the right ingredients for a fortnight of excellent entertainment with international food, inspiring musicians and of course, amazing audiences.  With all this to offer, the Festival certainly promises to be a feast for the senses.  More details on the full programme and the sampling evenings will be available on the festival website www.maldonfestival.co.uk and information on the products available for tasting can be found at www.zpienas.lt/en
