Mr R L Bass OBE
The Chairman of Maldon District Council, Cllr Bob Boyce MBE, said; “It is with great sadness that we have been advised of the sad death of R L Bass OBE.
“Rodney Bass had given 50 years of service to Local Government as an active Councillor at District, Parish and County level, culminating in being awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2017, in recognition of his service to Local Government in Essex.
“Mr Bass was the youngest Councillor in the Country when he was first elected at the age of 21, as a member of the Maldon Rural District Council prior to the creation of Maldon District Council in 1974. He had served on the Council for 40 years and during his long period of service, he held a number of key Committee positions both at District and County level. He had been Leader of the District Council, as was his father before him, and Chairman of the District Council twice.
“Mr Bass had been Chairman of Essex County Council and was also an honorary Alderman of Essex.
“Having come from a banking background, his financial knowledge was of huge benefit to the Council in managing its financial affairs, and this put the Council on the sound financial footing that has kept it in good stead to this day.
“Mr Bass had been a great colleague and friend to many during his forty years of service as a Member of Maldon District Council.
“On behalf of the whole Council, I offer our heartfelt condolences to his widow Margaret and all of the members of the Bass family at this sad time.
“I have requested that the Council’s flag be flown at half-mast until the day of his funeral. My personal thoughts go out to the family at this time; who have also been friends and colleagues over the years.
“The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time”.
