Published on Tuesday, 14th June 2022

Maldon District Council will be hosting a free, community festival on Friday 8 July to celebrate the arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay to the District.
This Free Community Festival Will Offer a Whole Day of Fun Activities to Celebrate the Queen’s Baton Relay
Councillor Penny Channer, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; “UFest, which will be held in Maldon’s Promenade Park, will feature activities, stalls and events for the whole community, focusing on health, wellbeing and fun. The event is being held on the Friday so we can welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay, but I hope residents will still try to pay a visit later in the day, or evening and enjoy this free event.
Activities will begin at 11am and run through into the evening with a stage line-up of musicians and entertainment, a food court and a Community Marquee with local organisations, sports clubs, schools and businesses offering fun engagement activities for everyone to enjoy.
One of the highlights of the day will be the arrival of the Queen’s Baton relay in the afternoon. The Baton contains a message from Her Majesty The Queen to the Commonwealth and has been carried around the world on a 294-day, 90,000-mile journey. It will reach its final destination at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on 28 July, where the message will be read out at the start of the Games.
When the Baton arrives in Maldon it will be carried by 10 specially chosen Baton bearers on a 2km course around Promenade Park, including paying a visit to the statue of Saxon hero Byrhtnoth, before concluding on the UFest stage.
The UFest event is funded by the National Lottery and will be run in partnership with Amphora Events.
