Housing association, Moat, will be carrying out energy efficiency upgrades to 250 customers’ homes in Maldon, Essex.

In light of rising energy costs, this project will have a hugely positive impact on Moat’s customers, helping them to keep energy usage and costs down, making their homes warmer and draughtproof, and reducing carbon emissions.

Moat has secured over £6 million in funding from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, a government-funded initiative that aims to support social housing providers to improve energy performance. The works in Maldon are part of a larger energy efficiency improvement project and Moat will also be carrying out work in areas of London and Kent.

Moat will be working with Breyer Group and United Living to deliver the energy efficiency works. Alongside their sustainable new build projects, and wider energy efficiency upgrade works, this project will help Moat to reduce their carbon footprint, invest in their homes for future generations, and help them achieve their ultimate goal of ensuring their customers’ homes have an EPC rating of D or above by March 2026.

The works in Maldon will include upgrading windows and doors, installing insulation, and in some cases installing PV solar panels, all of which will have a positive impact on customers’ energy costs, which is particularly important during the cost-of-living crisis and bill price hikes. United Living will soon reach out to customers in partnership with Moat to begin undertaking assessments to determine which works each home will require.

Head of Strategic Asset Management at Moat, Joanne Hiscock said: “This project will deliver big changes to our customers’ homes and will have a huge impact on the warmth of the homes, making them more affordable to heat and more comfortable to live in. Moat is proud to invest in homes for current and future generations and help customers reduce their carbon footprint.”

Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; “It is a wonderful opportunity for residents to benefit from having a more energy efficient home and ultimately cheaper energy bills, and this is particularly important at this current time when energy bills remain so high. This funding scheme will help deliver the pledges in the Council’s Climate Action strategy and it is great to see one of our community partners working together with us to deliver this.”

Simon Will, MD, United Living Property Services said: “We are delighted to be working with Moat Homes, delivering quality sustainable retrofit solutions, and showcasing some of the most advanced low carbon energy efficiency measures, to improve the lives of residents. The programme of works will help to reduce energy consumption, and improve thermal comfort, ventilation, and internal air quality.”
