Food waste caddy liners
Published on Thursday, 26th September 2024
As part of our ongoing reviews to ensure that we provide the best value services, the council made the decision that it would no longer supply food waste caddy liners.
The sourcing of caddy liners in bulk has become more complex and as we want to reduce the Council’s carbon emissions, not purchasing them will help us with the district’s carbon targets.
We therefore decided to take the same approach of the majority as other local councils and not provide the liners. There are, however, plenty of free or low-cost alternatives that you can use:
- You can use any thin plastic bag (such as a carrier bag or plastic bread bag) to contain the food waste,
- Alternatively use any biodegradable bag
- You can also wrap the food waste in newspaper and place it in the food bin
- Caddy liners can be purchased from shops and supermarkets
- Finally your food waste can be disposed of loosely in the food caddy.
Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; “This wasn’t any easy decision made by the Council and it was made to help us produce a balanced budget and to manage our costs, so that other services can be maintained. It will also help us manage some of our carbon emissions. Like all our decisions, it is something we will monitor and review.”
