New Community Supermarket Set To Be Launched

Published on Tuesday, 26th August 2025

Maldon District Council is pleased to announce its support for the Maldon and District CVS, which has secured the lease for 99 Wood Road, Heybridge, to strengthen the Community Supermarket provision within the district.

Following its initial launch in September 2024, the Community Supermarket has experienced steady growth by consistently providing affordable food options to residents throughout the area.

The Community Supermarket has received £20,000 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

A recent report on the regular sessions in Southminster and Burnham revealed that the social supermarket was able to support 172 different households with over 6,263 items. The average spend for these households was £7.85. Had they purchased these items elsewhere it would have cost them £11.22 making a saving of 30% on the food purchases.

Previously concentrated on the Dengie Peninsula, the expansion into the new premises at Wood Road, Heybridge, will allow services to be extended to Heybridge residents. Additionally, enhanced storage capabilities will facilitate greater product variety and improved value, benefitting all members of the community.

Furthermore, Maldon and District CVS intends to utilise the site as a community hub, offering initiatives such as an after-school gaming club commencing in September and regular drop-in information sessions.

Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; "It’s great to see the Community Supermarket flourishing and expanding its reach. By supporting Maldon and District CVS with their new site in Heybridge, we are helping to ensure that local families have access to affordable, nutritious food and vital community resources. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to fostering stronger, more resilient neighbourhoods throughout the district."

Sarah Troop, Director of Maldon & District CVS, said; "We are so pleased to have use of the Wood Road site in Heybridge, although initial plans were to only to enhance the social supermarket offer, the building at Wood Road has so much more potential for wider use. We are looking forward to creating a flexible community space benefitting residents in Heybridge and the district as a whole.

“Our first plan is to open up our Community Gaming Initiative to primary school children through an after school club in mid September, but we are also looking at slow cooker demonstrations and winter warmth events"
