Residents Have Their Say! Council Responds to Consultation on Dogs in Public Spaces

Published on Wednesday, 24th September 2025

Maldon District Council is set to renew and extend its current Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for controlling dogs across the District.

PSPOs are legal frameworks that aim to improve the quality of life for residents.

This change has come about after a fantastic response to a public consultation earlier this year, which asked the public for views on dogs in public spaces.

As a result of the feedback two new conditions will be added to the current PSPO. From 25th September 2025:

·         The current requirement for dogs to be kept on leads in certain areas of Promenade Park, Maldon, Riverside Park, Burnham and Burnham Quay Front during the summer, will now apply all year round.

·         A new requirement will be introduced to keep dogs on leads at all times in new areas; the open sports pitch areas at Promenade Park and Dengie 100 Sports Centre.

Full details of these requirements, together with maps of all the affected areas, can be found on the Council’s website at www.maldon.gov.uk/pspo

Councillor Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said “Almost 1300 people took part in the consultation to tell us what they think of dogs in public spaces like parks and sports pitches. I’m delighted that so many people could give us their views and as a result the action that we are now taking.

“Extending the current PSPO on controlling dogs in public spaces is an important step in supporting responsible dog ownership and maintaining the safety and enjoyment of public spaces across the District for everyone.”

Residents and visitors will start to see new signage in the Council’s public spaces to reflect the changes and Council staff will be on hand as the updated conditions are introduced over the coming weeks.
