Local Government Reorganisation - Statement from the Leader of the Council

Published on Tuesday, 8th September 2026

Cllr Simon Morgan, Leader of Maldon District Council, said:

“We are disappointed that the Government has withdrawn the decision it announced in March to progress the implementation of five unitary councils across Essex.

“Maldon District Council has worked closely and constructively with partners in Chelmsford and Brentwood to develop the proposed Mid Essex Council, and we were ready to take forward a model that we believe would have delivered strong, locally focused government for our communities.

“We will now await further information from MHCLG and will continue to work constructively with Government and partners across Essex as the next stage of Local Government Reorganisation develops and prepare for the District Council elections in May of next year.

“I want to reassure residents that despite all this change to proposed plans it remains very much ‘business as usual’ and council services will continue as normal.

“We will keep Councillors, staff, residents and stakeholders updated as further detail becomes available.”
