Paperless Parking Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is changing?

We’re installing new payment machines and moving to paperless parking in Maldon town centre and Promenade Park.

The new machines will:

  • Accept contactless payments only
  • Ask you to enter your vehicle registration number
  • Not print a paper ticket
  • Give you the option to request an email receipt

RingGo will remain available in all our car parks.

When will the changes happen?

Work will take place during November and is due to be completed by 20 November.

Signs are being put up before the work starts to give you advance notice. Please continue to use the existing machines as normal until signs in the car park tell you otherwise.

Where will the new machines be located?

The new machines will be installed at White Horse Lane, Butt Lane, High Street East, Friary Fields, and Promenade Park visitor car parks.

How will I pay at a new machine?

When using a new machine, you’ll need to:

  • Enter your vehicle registration number.
  • Choose how long you want to park.
  • Pay using contactless.
  • Request an email receipt if you would like one.

Instructions will also be available at the new machines.

Will the new machines accept cash?

No. The new machines will accept contactless payments only.

You can also pay using RingGo.

Will I receive a paper ticket?

No. The new machines will not print paper tickets.

Your payment will be linked to the vehicle registration number you enter at the machine.

Do I need to display anything in my vehicle?

No. There will be no paper ticket to display when you pay using one of the new machines.

Why do I need to enter my vehicle registration?

Your payment will be linked to your vehicle registration because the machine will not print a ticket.

These details will be used by our parking team to ensure that you have paid for your parking.

Please check that you have entered your registration correctly before you pay.

Can I get a receipt?

Yes. You’ll be able to request an email receipt when paying at one of the new machines.

Can I still use RingGo?

Yes. RingGo will remain available in all Maldon District Council car parks.

If you already use RingGo, you can continue to pay through the app as normal.

Do I need a smartphone to pay for parking?

You won’t need a smartphone at car parks where a new payment machine is available. You’ll be able to pay at the machine using contactless.

The Council Offices Car Park and Promenade Park Coach Park will become RingGo-only once their existing payment machines are removed.

Why is the Council making these changes?

  • Our current payment machines are at the end of their service life
  • Reduce paper waste and our carbon footprint
  • Reduce administration
  • Reduce machine maintenance
  • Run our car parks more cost-effectively
  • Make paying for parking easier for residents and visitors

Are payment machines being removed?

Yes. We’re reducing the number of payment machines as part of the changes.

New contactless payment machines will still be available in Maldon town centre and the main Promenade Park car park. Signs in each car park will explain the payment options available there.

What is happening at the Council Offices Car Park?

The payment machine at the Council Offices Car Park will be removed during November due to low levels of use.

Once the machine has been removed, you’ll need to use RingGo to pay for parking at the Council Offices Car Park.

Please continue to use the existing machine as normal until it is removed.

What is happening at Promenade Park Coach Park?

The payment machine at Promenade Park Coach Park will be removed during November due to low levels of use.

Once the machine has been removed, you’ll be able to pay for parking at the Coach Park using RingGo. Payment machines will remain available in the main Promenade Park car park.

Please continue to use the existing Coach Park machine as normal until it is removed.

What does a ‘We’re Going Paperless’ sign mean?

These signs are being put up in car parks where new contactless payment machines will be installed.

They are going up in advance to let you know that changes are coming. Please continue to pay as normal until the new machine is ready to use.

Signs in the car park will explain how to use the new machine once it is ready.

What does a ‘We’re Going Digital’ sign mean?

These signs are being put up where an existing payment machine will be removed without a replacement at that location.

Please continue to use the existing machine as normal until it is removed. The signs will explain how you can pay after the change.

Are parking charges changing as part of this project?

No. There are no changes to parking charges as part of the move to paperless parking.

Any future changes to parking charges would be separate from this project.

What should I do if I need help?

Instructions will be available at the new machines, and signs in our car parks will help explain what you need to do.

We’ll also share updates and guidance on our Facebook and Instagram pages as the changes take place.
