Thames Barges, Hythe Quay, Maldon

Leader of the Council's response to the news that Thames Barge Kitty is relocating to North Fambridge.
Cllr Adrian Fluker, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; “The Council is sorry to learn that the owners of Kitty have made the commercial decision to move her to North Fambridge. Over the last few years the Council has invested over £484k to enhance the Hythe Quay and to improve the electrical facilities, lighting and £20,000 worth of dredging for the much improved visitor pontoon all of which has been to the benefit of the Barges. The Council sets the fees and charges on an annual basis and has only just set the fees and charges for 2020/21 so discussions about any future increases are very premature. The agreement with the Barge Operators is that there will be a 10% rise in mooring fees for the new financial year, with a guarantee that we will meet with Barge operators before any future rises are considered. The Council has made it clear to them that it continues to be committed to preserving the unique heritage of the area and values the Barges as an attraction in encouraging tourism to the District.”
