Maldon District Council is committed to acting against climate change, so we are delighted to be supporting the Heybridge and Maldon Climate Action Partnership in celebrating Green Hearts February.

The community has come together to make and display green hearts as part of The Climate Coalition’s Show the Love campaign, which aims to raise awareness of climate change, urge MPs to act and encourage individuals to play an active role in creating change.

Wooden hearts have been made by the Maldon Men’s Shed from waste wood, local Women’s Institute members have created fabric hearts and customers of Heart of Craft have been busy making decorated green symbols of love. The hearts will be displayed in shops in Maldon High Street and Heybridge, including Heart of Craft, Silo Zero Waste Refillery, the Salvation Army charity shop and Henry Eight antiques.

Visitors to the shops will be encouraged to write a message on the wooden hearts showing their love for the environment, whether that’s a personal commitment to take climate action, a message for their MP, or a wish for the planet. Messages will be written in chalk pens, so the hearts can be reused year after year.

Councillor Penny Channer, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: “As part of the Council’s Our Home, Our Future’ Climate Action Strategy, we committed ourselves to five climate pledges, two of which are ‘Show Nature We Care’ and ‘Create Less Waste’. This is a wonderfully creative and visual way in which local people can join with us in those aims, using recycled materials to send a positive message about how important our planet is to us all.”
