Burnham-on-Crouch Pontoon Project Moves Forward

Published on Friday, 14th July 2023

The Council is pleased to announce that following the tendering procedure, NEX have been chosen as the architects to lead and develop the options for the new pontoon in Burnham-on-Crouch.

Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said, “I am really pleased to announce that the project to replace the much loved pontoon in Burnham-on-Crouch is moving forward.

“I know residents and businesses will be pleased with the news that architects have been appointed, and that designs can now be developed. Once the concept designs are complete, they will be shared with the community for their views before a final design is taken forward.

“This is an opportunity to install a quality pontoon, which will deliver much more than was there previously. This will benefit the Burnham-on-Crouch community and visitors who enjoy the Crouch river.

“I am eager to get this project mobilised and delivered professionally, and this is the first key stage in the project.”

Work will also begin in the new year on the Council owned Houseboat berth (recently vacated by the Llys Helig) which will bring further change to the shorefront of Burnham-on-Crouch. Nex will be overseeing the technical design of the berth as part of their role with the Council.

On being awarded the contract Nex, said; "We are thrilled to have been chosen to design Burnham on Crouch's new berth and pontoon, honouring its rich sailing legacy. Drawing on our experience with public realm piers, we will work with the team at Maldon District Council and the local community to create a new landmark that enhances the estuary. Our aim is to balance heritage and modernity to benefit both residents and visitors alike.”

Updates on the pontoon project will be announced as they are available and the www.maldon.gov.uk/pontoon page will be updated as the project progresses.
