Published on Tuesday, 15th October 2024
We are excited to announce the commencement of the One Maldon District Thriving Places Grant Programme.
Working closely with our community partners, we have shortlisted five projects as part of the Thriving Places initiative. These projects aim to address critical community needs and promote wellbeing across the district.
Shortlisted Projects:
-
BoxSmart On The Ropes and Girls Inspired Courses
-
Delivery Partner: Active Essex Foundation
-
Description: Active Essex Foundation will be delivering intensive support courses in Southminster, Heybridge, and Burnham on Crouch. These programmes target young people facing inactivity, inequality, or risk of exploitation. By introducing them to boxing and other physical activities, the initiative aims to promote health and deter antisocial behaviour.
-
Mental Health Counselling and Toolkit Training for Secondary School Children
-
Delivery Partner: Mid and North Essex Mind
-
Description: Collaborating with Plume Academy, Mid and North Essex Mind will provide mental health counselling and support for students. The project will also offer ‘Mental Health Toolkit Training’ for parents and teachers to support children and young people facing mental health challenges.
-
Walking Football
-
Delivery Partner: Beacon Hill Rovers FC
-
Description: This project will expand sporting activities for the older generation, targeting women and men aged 65–75. It will include green space maintenance and provide a social space to discuss aspects of older life, such as emotions and mental health.
-
Men’s Health Project
-
Delivery Partner: Maldon Library and satellite libraries
-
Description: Launching in November during Men’s Month, Maldon Library will host events and establish a bi-weekly support group. This initiative will provide information and signposting on issues such as mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and family custody.
-
Maldon Pioneers in the Dengie
-
Delivery Partner: Maldon Pioneers
-
Description: A new group for people living with learning disabilities will be created in the Dengie area. The group will offer social activities and support to enhance both emotional and physical wellbeing. The goal is for the group to develop self-sustaining capacities over time.
These projects focus primarily on mental health—a key priority for One Maldon partners—while also promoting community cohesion, safety, and the use of green spaces. Each project addresses the needs of specific vulnerable groups, while collectively adopting an intergenerational approach that fosters opportunities for joint working and shared learning.

Cllr Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; "We are incredibly proud to see the launch of the first projects under the Thriving Places Grant Programme. These initiatives represent our commitment to tackling the challenges our communities face, especially around mental health and wellbeing.
“By bringing together local partners and focusing on intergenerational and community-led projects, we are building a stronger, more cohesive district where everyone can thrive. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these projects will have over the coming months."
Jane Gardner Chair of One Maldon District added; “I am really pleased that the One Maldon District partnership has shortlisted five such amazing projects and the Thriving Places Grant Programme. They will each make a huge difference to those in the community who need help and support and ensure lasting benefits for all who use them.”
