Xplorer Set to Launch Across Maldon and Burnham This Summer
Published on Tuesday, 21st July 2026
Families across the Maldon District are being invited to get active, explore the outdoors and discover their local parks this summer as Xplorer arrives at Promenade Park and Riverside Park.
The programme is being delivered by Maldon District Council and funded through the Active Maldon programme.
Xplorer is a family-friendly outdoor navigation game created by British Orienteering. Designed especially for children and families, it introduces young people to the basics of orienteering through fun challenges that encourage them to explore parks and open spaces, find markers and answer simple questions along the way.
The activity is completely free to take part in and provides a fun way for families to enjoy time together outdoors during the summer holidays.
Active Maldon is the Council's health and wellbeing programme, helping residents become more active and make use of local parks, open spaces and community facilities. Through projects such as Xplorer, the programme aims to encourage healthy lifestyles and make physical activity accessible to people of all ages.
To help residents learn more about the project, the Council will be running a weekly engagement stand in Promenade Park every Wednesday during the school summer holidays from 10am to 4pm. Visitors will be able to meet the team, find out how Xplorer works and discover other opportunities to get active in the district. The team will also be coming to Riverside Park, with dates to be announced soon.
The Council is also encouraging parish and town councils to get involved. Funding opportunities are available through the Active Maldon programme for parish and town councils that would like to bring Xplorer to their own communities and green spaces. The Council's health and wellbeing team is available to discuss how local organisations can apply for support.
Councillor Simon Morgan, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: "We want our young people and families to get outside, get moving and make the most of the fantastic parks and open spaces we have across the district.
"Xplorer is a brilliant way to turn a walk into an adventure. It gets children exploring, learning new skills and being active, while spending quality time with family and friends.
"Providing free activities like this helps remove barriers and gives more families the opportunity to enjoy healthy outdoor experiences during the school holidays. We're delighted to be bringing Xplorer to Promenade Park and Riverside Park, and we're keen to help more communities across the district benefit from it too."
Residents can visit the engagement stand at Promenade Park throughout the summer holidays or follow the Council's social media channels for further information on how to take part.
Notes: Dates for in-person engagement sessions in Riverside Park will be announced on the council’s social media channels.
