Conservation and heritage awards winners 2026

The winners of the 43rd Maldon District Conservation and Design Awards have been announced.

The winners for 2026 include the conservation of an 18th century grade ll listed former smithy with a 'sideways lean' and crooked windows, the design of a new church in Tolleshunt Knights with intricate hand-painted murals and the sympathetic renovation of a pub dating from as far back as 1740.

The awards presentation took place in Friends Meeting House, Maldon on 6th October. The winners were selected by a judging panel comprising, amongst others, architects and conservation specialists.

Councillor Tony Fittock, Maldon District Councillor and Chair of the Judging Panel, said: “Congratulations to all the winners and those highly commended this year. Seeing first-hand the work that goes into the conservation and renovation of these properties has been inspiring. The detail that is included in these properties, such as hand-forged nails, mosaics and traditional materials has been wonderful to see and I would like to congratulate all the owners and crafts people who have taken on these challenges.”

Councillor Simon Morgan, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: “I am always proud of our beautiful district and the people that make it so special. Seeing the hard work that local crafts people, architects and owners put into conserving our built environment and designing for the future is wonderful to see. Congratulations to everyone who was involved."
