We are excited to be working in partnership with Essex County Council to increase the amount of food waste recycled through your weekly food recycling collection in the Maldon District.
You may have noticed a reminder sticker on your grey bin or through your letterbox (if your bin is not presented or cannot be easily found), along with a one-off roll of compostable food caddy liners and an information leaflet.
In Essex, roughly 25% of waste thrown away in the general rubbish is food waste. Not only is this a waste of money but it’s also damaging the environment.
When food waste is sent to landfill, it lets off harmful greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. However, when food waste is recycled, it is transformed into energy and fertiliser!
To find out more about this project, visit the food recycling page on the Love Essex website .
It is important to reduce the amount of waste we all generate and to recycle or reuse whatever we can.
Most waste has a value and food waste is no exception. Food waste can produce soil fertiliser or create energy used by the National Grid, so let's not waste it.
We provide a weekly collection of food waste. You can lock your food caddy to keep domestic animals and wildlife away.
You can empty your food waste into a small container with a lid, like an ice cream tub or kitchen caddy. You can then transfer this into your food caddy.
If you wish to wrap it first, you can use a sheet of newspaper or a caddy liner. You should not put any other non-food waste into the caddy.
What can go in your food caddy
You can put most food waste in your food caddy such as:
- meat and fish, both raw and cooked, including bones
- fruit and vegetables, both raw and cooked, including peelings
- dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese
- eggs and eggshells
- bread, cakes and pastries
- rice, pasta and beans
- uneaten food from plates and dishes
- tea bags and coffee grounds
- pet food
What can't go in your food caddy
We can't collect your food caddy if it contains:
- glass
- packaging of any sort
- liquids
- oil or liquid fat
- pet bedding or faeces
