Garden waste collection service

About the Service

Garden waste collections are made weekly from Mid February to the beginning of December.

Collections must be made in a garden waste bin that has been provided by Maldon District Council.

From December to mid February garden waste collections are made each fortnight, apart from 2 weeks after the Christmas and New Year period where collections are suspended.

What can go in my green wheeled bin?

The following items can be placed in your green garden waste bin:

  • Hedge and shrub clippings
  • Twigs and small branches (no bigger than 2 inches in diameter)
  • Cut flowers
  • Windfall fruit (please ensure that your bin does not become too heavy, if necessary please split them over a few weeks)
  • Leaves
  • Grass cuttings (please only part fill your bin if the cuttings are wet as they can become too heavy to lift safely if the bin is full)

Please ensure no other items are placed in your green garden waste bin, including but not limited to:

  • Soil and compost
  • Turf
  • Animal and pet bedding including straw and sawdust
  • Animal waste (poo and cat litter)
  • Japanese knotweed
  • Giant hogweed
  • Broad leaved dock
  • Curled dock
  • Creeping thistle
  • Ragwort
  • Spear thistle

New Subscribers

If you would like to register your interest in joining the scheme please complete our online application form.  If you have provided an email address we will send the letter via email.

You will receive your joining letter within 10 working days.

Renewing your subscription

Garden waste renewal letters will be posted to subscribers week commencing 16 February.

The subscription year runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 and the fee to renew your subscription this year is £75.00 per bin.

Direct Debit customers only

If you pay by direct debit your subscription will automatically be renewed unless you cancel it.

If you need to amend your direct debit details you can download a new mandate.  Please ensure that the signed mandate is returned to us by 13 March to allow us time to set this up with your bank. 

If you already pay by direct debit and you would like to pay your subscription over 2 consecutive monthly payments in April and May please complete our online form by 13 March.

Pay online or by telephone

If you pay by debit card please renew your subscription by 31 March to ensure continuity of service.

If you would like to pay by direct debit please download a direct debit mandate and return it to us by 13 March.


Replacement bins

New bins are guaranteed for 3 years after delivery and will be replaced free of charge if they are damaged within this time.  If your bin becomes damaged in year 4 or 5 after it was purchased you will have to pay half of the current bin replacement fee.  After year 5 you will need to purchase a new bin at the full current price..

Please note that this guarantee is only for damaged bins.  If your bin is lost or stolen you will need to purchase a new bin regardless of when it was issued.

The current cost to replace a garden waste bin is £38.00

To order a new bin please complete our online form , select 'request a bin or recycling container' and select 'replace a 240L green bin'.  You may keep your old bin for storage purposes but if you would like us to remove the old bin when we deliver the new one, please advise us of this by adding a message in the notes.  Payment for the new bin can be made online or via our automated telephone payment line 01621 212410.  Remember to quote your unique garden waste reference number when making payment and allow up to 10 working days for delivery.


Cancellation

To cancel your garden waste collection subscription, please complete our online form.

Please note that we will not remove your green garden waste bin should you cancel your subscription.
