Our building control service is responsible for investigating reports of dangerous buildings and structures in the Maldon district. Buildings or structures can become dangerous at any time, due to settlement, old age, damage through fire or explosion, storm damage, vehicle impact or design defects.
When reporting a dangerous structure, you will need to provide us with:
- The location of the dangerous structure
- The nature of the incident
- Your contact details – name, address, telephone number and email address
- Contact details of the building owner (if known)
We will respond immediately to any report of a suspected dangerous structure. We will visit the site, assess the need for urgent action and make the necessary arrangements to have the risk removed or the site made safe.
If there is no immediate danger then we will contact the owner of the building or structure, as it is their responsibility to ensure their property is maintained and in a safe condition. If the owner refuses, we can carry out enforcement action through the Magistrate’s Court.
In an emergency, we may employ a contractor to make a building or structure safe. In these cases, we will recover our costs from the building owner.
