Small Business Rate Relief

Eligible businesses with rateable values of below £6,000 will get 50% rate relief on their liability, decreasing on a sliding scale by an estimated 1% for every £120 of the rateable value over £6,000, up to £12,000.

This relief is only available to ratepayers with either:

  • one property, or
  • one main property and other additional properties providing the additional properties do not have individual rateable values of more than £2,600, and the combined rateable value of all the properties is under £18,000

In addition to this, relief eligible businesses with rateable values of between £12,000 and £17,999 will have their rates calculated using the small business multiplier.

Businesses have until 30 September 2015 to make an application for relief for the period of 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2015.

Temporary increase in small business rate relief

The current temporary increase in Small Business Rate Relief, which started on 1 October 2010 and was due to end on 30 September 2011, will continue for a further year (1 October 2011 to 30 September 2012).

Eligible ratepayers with rateable values of less than £6,000 will receive 100% relief for the period, while eligible ratepayers with rateable values between £6,000 and not more than £12,000 receive tapered relief from 100% to 0%.

Ratepayers need take no action, revised rate demand notices showing any additional relief for the period 1 October 2011 to 31 March 2012 will be issued during September 2011.
