Ms M Ellis
Prom Swimming Group 2017

Maldon Prom Swimming Lake and Paddle Boats To bring back Maldon Prom swimming lake and paddle boats. Replacing the current ornamental lake with a very natural river fed marine lake for swimming which preserves and promotes the Edwardian history of the Maldon Prom.

The Council agreed not to take the action requested by the Petition for the following reasons:

  • The proposal to reinstate the Maldon Swimming Lake and paddle boats would effectively require this Council to construct an artificial lake
  • This would mean that the Council would then fall under the Health and Safety Executive guidance managing Health and Safety in Swimming pools
    • Guidance suggests that a higher duty of care is required for children and young adults particularly if they are unsupervised
  • The risk levels associated with the reinstatement of the lake are unacceptable for the public and this Council to manage
6 June 2018 Ms E Shopova Speed Camera in Wantz Road To place a speed camera on Wantz Road to deter speeding drivers and reduce the risk of accidents.

Maldon District Council fully supports initiatives to improve road safety and is a member of the Community Safety Partnership which consists of a number of organisations including the Police and Fire and Rescue Service which work together to address public safety and are involved in a number of initiatives in this regard. One such initiative is the TRUCAM speed checks and it may be that we can include Wantz Road as a future new location. This discussion will be taken forward.

In regard to your request for a speed camera however, this would need to be addressed to Essex Police. I have spoken to a colleague within Essex Police who advises that Mr Andrew Harris at The Safer Essex Roads Partnership is the principal contact for the request of any permanent speed camera. Please be further advised that any decision should be evidence based using existing speed data survey results or if one has not been carried out recently a further survey could be considered by the Highways Authority.
